Nacystelyn is a lysine salt of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) developed by Laboratoires S.M.B. as a pH-neutral mucolytic and antioxidant agent. Unlike standard N-acetylcysteine, which is acidic, Nacystelyn is formulated to have a physiological pH (approximately 7.4), making it better tolerated for administration via inhalation as a dry powder or nebulized solution. Its primary mechanism of action involves the cleavage of disulfide bonds in mucoproteins, which reduces the viscosity and elasticity of bronchial secretions, thereby facilitating airway clearance. Additionally, it acts as a potent antioxidant by directly scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and serving as a precursor for the synthesis of intracellular glutathione. While primarily investigated for respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Nacystelyn has also been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to address systemic oxidative stress and improve sleep parameters.
