NAITgam is a plasma-derived immunoglobulin containing specific IgG antibodies against the human platelet antigen HPA-1a, manufactured from plasma donated by women previously sensitized through pregnancy with FNAIT. It is developed as a prophylactic therapy to prevent fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT), a rare but serious condition where maternal alloantibodies attack fetal platelets, risking severe bleeding or neurological damage in the newborn. The drug works by removing fetal HPA-1a positive platelets from the mother’s circulation before her immune system can form damaging antibodies, akin to the approach used with Rh immune globulin in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. NAITgam is administered as a single injection to HPA-1a negative women shortly after delivering an HPA-1a positive child[1][3][4][6][7].
