Overview

Naive mesenchymal stem cells (n-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells that have not undergone ex vivo priming or activation with pro-inflammatory cytokines. In the context of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), these cells—specifically those isolated from healthy term placentas—are being investigated for their potent immunomodulatory properties. n-MSCs function by inhibiting lymphocyte proliferation and modulating the secretion of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-17A, and IFN-γ. Research indicates that n-MSCs can shift T-cell dynamics toward a more regulatory profile, typically increasing CD4+ and decreasing CD8+ T cells. Compared to targeted biologics like adalimumab, n-MSCs offer a broader immunoregulatory profile, suggesting potential as a multitarget therapy for complex inflammatory skin diseases. These cells are currently in the experimental pilot stage of development for HS.
