Overview

Naja haje venom is a complex biological secretion derived from the Egyptian cobra, containing a diverse array of bioactive molecules including cytotoxins, cardiotoxins, and enzymes like L-amino acid oxidase. In preclinical oncology research, the crude venom has demonstrated significant anticancer potency, particularly against breast cancer (MCF-7) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell lines. Its therapeutic potential is driven by the induction of apoptosis through the generation of oxidative stress, which leads to increased lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, and the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) due to cell membrane disruption. While primarily known for its lethal envenomation effects, its individual components are being investigated as scaffolds for novel drug discovery to target malignant cells with high specificity.
