Overview

Naja naja oxiana snake venom is a research-stage biological compound derived from the Iranian Caspian cobra. It is a complex mixture of enzymatic and non-enzymatic proteins, including L-amino acid oxidase, phospholipase A2, and neurotoxins such as neurotoxin II. Preclinical research, primarily conducted at the Pasteur Institute of Iran, has explored its potential in treating several conditions, including colon and lung cancers, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, cutaneous leishmaniasis, malaria, and diabetes. The venom's therapeutic effects are attributed to its ability to induce apoptosis in malignant cells via mitochondrial pathways, inactivate NF-κB signaling, inhibit the expression of pro-angiogenic factors like VEGF, and modulate immune responses by shifting the Th1/Th2 balance.
