NAL1877 is a sustained-release microsphere formulation of leuprolide acetate, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor agonist. Developed by NAL Pharmaceutical Group, it is designed for the treatment of hormone-sensitive cancers, such as prostate cancer. The drug works by initially stimulating the GnRH receptor, which leads to a transient increase in gonadotropins, followed by down-regulation and desensitization of the receptors. This results in the suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion, ultimately leading to a significant reduction in testosterone or estrogen levels to castrate levels. The microsphere modality allows for controlled, long-term release of the peptide via injection.
