Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The nalmefene implant is an investigational sustained-release formulation of the opioid antagonist nalmefene, being developed by ReacX Pharmaceuticals for the prevention of relapse in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) following detoxification. Utilizing the proprietary ProNeura drug delivery platform, the subdermal implant is designed to provide continuous, long-term therapeutic drug delivery for six months or longer. Nalmefene acts as a long-acting opioid antagonist that blocks mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors, effectively preventing the reinforcing effects and respiratory depression associated with exogenous opioids. This development program is supported by the NIH HEAL Initiative and represents a long-acting alternative to daily oral or shorter-acting injectable treatments for OUD maintenance.
