Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Naltrexone extended-release is a microsphere formulation of the opioid antagonist medication naltrexone, administered by intramuscular (IM) gluteal injection once a month. It works by binding to and blocking opioid receptors in the brain, which reduces opioid cravings and prevents the euphoric and sedative effects of opioids. The extended-release injectable form helps address patient noncompliance, which can limit the effectiveness of oral naltrexone. Unlike oral naltrexone which has a sawtooth pattern of peaks and troughs with each daily dose, the extended-release formulation provides a more consistent delivery of the medication over time.
