Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Libero Pharma is developing a transdermal naltrexone patch for the treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Naltrexone is a small molecule opioid receptor antagonist that primarily targets the μ-opioid receptor to reduce alcohol cravings and consumption. This transdermal delivery system is designed to provide sustained drug release, bypassing first-pass metabolism and potentially reducing the hepatotoxicity and gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea and abdominal pain, associated with oral formulations. By providing a continuous delivery method, the patch aims to improve patient adherence compared to daily oral medications. In addition to AUD, the company is exploring the patch for Opioid Use Disorder, Fibromyalgia, and Crohn's disease.
