Naluzotan is a small molecule drug of the phenylpiperazine class that was developed as a serotonergic agent for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. It acts primarily as a selective and potent partial agonist at the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, with additional activity as an antagonist at the sigma-1 receptor. Naluzotan was investigated in clinical trials for its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, showing some efficacy but ultimately not demonstrating sufficient superiority over placebo to warrant further development for these indications. The drug was also explored for epilepsy due to its potential to increase neurotransmitter activity at 5-HT1A receptor sites, which may reduce seizure incidence and severity.
