Overview

Nandrolone phenylpropionate (NPP) is a small molecule androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS) that acts as an agonist of the androgen receptor. It is the C17β phenylpropionate ester of nandrolone (19-nortestosterone), a synthetic derivative of testosterone. NPP was first described in 1957 and received FDA approval in 1959 under the trade name Durabolin. Historically, it was utilized for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and osteoporosis in women, as well as for managing cachexia, various anemias, and chronic kidney disease. Administered via intramuscular injection, NPP has a shorter half-life than nandrolone decanoate, typically requiring weekly dosing. Although it was once widely used, it has been largely discontinued in clinical practice, having been superseded by the longer-acting decanoate formulation.
