Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nanfeng tangerine polysaccharide is a bioactive carbohydrate polymer extracted from the pulp of the Nanfeng tangerine (*Citrus reticulata* Blanco cv. Nanfengmiju). It is primarily investigated for its potential to treat inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis. The compound functions by restoring intestinal barrier integrity and modulating the gut microbiota. Specifically, it has been shown to enhance the expression of tight junction proteins like ZO-1 and Occludin, as well as the mucus-associated protein Mucin-2 (MUC2). In preclinical models, Nanfeng tangerine polysaccharide significantly inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, with a particularly strong inhibitory effect on Interleukin-6 (IL-6). Furthermore, it promotes a healthy microbial balance by enriching beneficial bacteria such as *Akkermansia* and *Parabacteroides*, which in turn increases the production of short-chain fatty acids like propionate and butyrate.
