Nano-chitosan is a nanoparticle formulation of chitosan, a natural polysaccharide derived from the shells of crustaceans. In the context of dental medicine, specifically for treating tooth discoloration, it is being developed by Misr University for Science and Technology as a gel to activate or enhance the efficacy of non-vital in-office bleaching agents like carbamide peroxide. The nanoparticle size allows for better penetration into the dental tubules and may help in the controlled release of bleaching agents or provide synergistic effects when combined with diode laser therapy. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to compare its efficacy against diode laser activation alone for non-vital tooth bleaching.
