Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nano-cyclosporine refers to novel formulations of the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine that utilize nanotechnology—such as nanocapsules or nanomicelles—to enhance drug delivery and tissue penetration. These advanced formulations are designed to improve the solubility and bioavailability of hydrophobic cyclosporine for topical use (e.g., skin or ocular applications), potentially reducing systemic side effects compared to oral or injectable forms. Mechanistically, nano-cyclosporine acts as a calcineurin inhibitor by blocking T-cell activation and suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-2. Nano-formulations have been studied for conditions such as atopic dermatitis (topical application) and dry eye disease (ocular application), showing improved efficacy in local tissue targeting with reduced systemic exposure[6][7]. OTX-101 is an example of a marketed nanomicellar ophthalmic solution containing cyclosporine for dry eye disease[7].
