Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NANO-efavirenz is an experimental solid drug nanoparticle (SDN) formulation of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) efavirenz. Developed through a collaboration between the University of Liverpool and St Stephen's AIDS Trust, this formulation utilizes nanotechnology to enhance the bioavailability of the active ingredient, potentially allowing for a significant dose reduction (e.g., from 600mg to 50mg or 200mg-300mg) while maintaining therapeutic plasma concentrations. It was primarily developed to improve the safety, affordability, and accessibility of HIV treatment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, as part of the OPTIMIZE consortium. The formulation was evaluated in a Phase 1 adaptive pharmacokinetic study in healthy volunteers.
