Nano-hydroquinone is a specialized topical formulation of the depigmenting agent hydroquinone, developed by the China-Japan Friendship Hospital specifically for the treatment of melasma. By utilizing nanotechnology—typically in the form of nanoemulsions or nanostructured lipid carriers—this formulation addresses the inherent limitations of conventional hydroquinone, such as chemical instability, poor skin penetration, and a high incidence of skin irritation. The mechanism of action involves the potent inhibition of tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the melanogenesis pathway, thereby reducing the production of melanin in hyperactive melanocytes. The nano-encapsulation allows for a controlled release of the active ingredient and enhanced delivery to the melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis, resulting in improved clinical efficacy and a more favorable safety profile compared to standard hydroquinone preparations.
