Nano-hydroquinone cream is a specialized topical formulation of the skin-depigmenting agent hydroquinone, engineered using nanotechnology to improve therapeutic outcomes in the treatment of melasma. Developed by researchers at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, this formulation typically contains 2% hydroquinone encapsulated in a nano-delivery system, such as nanoparticles or a nanoemulsion. The primary objective of the nano-formulation is to enhance the penetration of hydroquinone into the epidermal layers where melanocytes reside, while simultaneously minimizing common side effects associated with conventional hydroquinone, such as skin irritation and erythema. Mechanistically, hydroquinone functions as a potent inhibitor of tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin biosynthesis, thereby reducing the production of pigment in hyperpigmented areas.
