Nano hydroxyapatite reinforced glass ionomer is an experimental dental restorative biomaterial developed by researchers at Cairo University. It is designed specifically for the treatment of root caries in geriatric patients. The material is a modification of conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC), which typically consists of a fluoro-aluminosilicate glass powder and polyacrylic acid. By incorporating nano-sized hydroxyapatite particles (approximately 5% by weight), the material aims to enhance mechanical properties, improve chemical adhesion to the tooth structure, and promote the remineralization of demineralized dentin. The glass ionomer component provides a sustained release of fluoride, offering anti-cariogenic effects, while the nano-hydroxyapatite mimics the natural mineral phase of the tooth to facilitate repair.
