Overview

Nano-propolis is a nanoparticle-based formulation of propolis, a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. Developed and investigated by researchers at Cairo University, it is being evaluated as an endodontic irrigant for the treatment of necrotic mature teeth associated with periapical periodontitis. Propolis contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and esters, which confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The nano-formulation is specifically designed to enhance the penetration of these active constituents into the complex root canal anatomy and dentinal tubules, improving the disinfection of the root canal system. This enhanced disinfection is a critical step in regenerative endodontic procedures (revascularization), aimed at promoting the healing of periapical tissues and the potential regeneration of the pulp-dentin complex.
