Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**NANO-PSO** is a nano-formulation of pomegranate seed oil, designed to enhance delivery of its active component, punicic acid (omega-5), and its neuroprotective metabolite, conjugated linoleic acid, to the brain. By utilizing nanotechnology to create an oil-in-water nanoemulsion, the formulation increases brain bioavailability and has shown effects in animal models and early clinical development in mitigating cognitive decline and neuronal cell loss associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI), Alzheimer's disease models, genetic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and perimenopausal vasomotor symptoms. Its purported mechanisms are primarily antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective, reducing oxidative stress, neuronal death, reactive gliosis, and mitochondrial dysfunction. NANO-PSO increases levels of neuroprotective proteins (SIRT1, synaptophysin) and preserves mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase (COX IV1) activity.
