Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nano-silymarin is a nanomicellar formulation of silymarin, a polyphenolic flavonoid extract derived from milk thistle (*Silybum marianum*). Silymarin is composed of active flavonolignans, primarily silybin, silydianin, and silychristin, which possess potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties. Due to the poor oral bioavailability of natural silymarin, nano-sizing (reducing particles to 1–100 nm) or nanomicellar encapsulation is utilized to enhance absorption and cellular delivery. Nano-silymarin is being investigated for various therapeutic applications, including the prevention of chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression, hand-foot syndrome, neuropathy, and hepatotoxicity, as well as vancomycin-induced nephrotoxicity, COVID-19, and multiple sclerosis (MS) as an immunomodulatory adjunct to stem cell therapies.
