Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nanocort is a novel intravenous formulation of pegylated liposomes encapsulating prednisolone sodium phosphate, designed to target inflammatory sites while minimizing systemic corticosteroid toxicity. Developed by Enceladus Pharmaceuticals (originating from Utrecht University) and later in collaboration with Galapagos and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Nanocort leverages the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect to selectively accumulate in inflamed tissues, such as atherosclerotic plaques, arthritic joints, and inflamed bowel lesions. Once localized, the liposomes release prednisolone, a potent glucocorticoid receptor agonist, providing sustained local anti-inflammatory efficacy. Nanocort has been evaluated in clinical trials for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, and peripheral artery disease.
