NanoDTPA is a novel oral formulation of the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), specifically developed for the decorporation of transuranium radionuclides such as Americium-241, Plutonium-239, and Curium-244 following internal contamination. Standard DTPA (administered as Ca-DTPA or Zn-DTPA) exhibits poor gastrointestinal absorption and typically requires intravenous injection or nebulized inhalation. NanoDTPA utilizes nanoparticle technology to significantly enhance the oral bioavailability of the chelator, facilitating easier administration in large-scale radiological emergency scenarios. The mechanism of action involves the formation of stable, water-soluble complexes with heavy metal radionuclides, which are subsequently eliminated from the body via renal excretion. The drug was originally developed by Nanotherapeutics, Inc. and has received FDA Orphan Drug designation.
