Overview

NanoEcho Particle-1 (NEP-1) is an iron oxide-based nanoparticle diagnostic imaging agent developed by NanoEcho AB for the detection of lymph node metastases in rectal cancer. The active ingredient is ferumoxtran, an ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticle supplied as Ferrotran. NEP-1 is administered via submucosal injection near the rectal tumor, where it enters the lymphatic system and distributes within regional lymph nodes. It is designed to be used with NanoEcho's proprietary magnetomotive ultrasound (MMUS) imaging system, which uses a rotating magnet to induce movement in the nanoparticles. This movement is detected by ultrasound to create an 'nTrace' signal, allowing clinicians to distinguish between healthy and metastatic lymph nodes based on the iron distribution pattern. This technology aims to improve the accuracy of rectal cancer staging and guide surgical decision-making.
