NanoFlu is a recombinant quadrivalent nanoparticle influenza vaccine (qNIV) developed by Novavax. It is composed of recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) proteins from four seasonal influenza strains (two A and two B) that are organized into nanoparticles. The vaccine is formulated with Novavax's proprietary saponin-based Matrix-M adjuvant, which is designed to enhance the immune response by stimulating both humoral and cellular immunity. NanoFlu is specifically developed to address the limitations of traditional egg-based vaccines, such as egg-adaptive mutations, and to provide broader protection against drifted influenza strains, particularly in older adults aged 65 years and older. It has demonstrated non-inferiority and, in some cases, superior immunogenicity compared to standard quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines (IIV4) in Phase 3 clinical trials.
