NanoGd is a gadolinium-based, fluorophore-grafted multimodal nanoparticle designed as an imaging agent to target and track phagocytic cells, specifically microglia and macrophages. Developed through a partnership involving the company MATHYM, it serves as a contrast agent for both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence microscopy. The probe is primarily investigated for monitoring neuroinflammation in the subacute stage of ischemic stroke, where it accumulates in ischemic lesions via internalization by immune cells. Additionally, related formulations of gadolinium fluoride nanoparticles grafted with luminescent-conjugated polythiophenes have been explored for targeting amyloid-beta plaques in Alzheimer's disease.
