Nanohydroxyapatite is a synthetic, nanoscale form of hydroxyapatite—a calcium phosphate mineral that is the primary inorganic component of human bone and tooth enamel. Its chemical structure closely mimics natural apatite found in teeth and bones, making it highly biocompatible. In dentistry, nanohydroxyapatite is primarily used for its remineralizing properties: it can penetrate microscopic defects in enamel and dentin to restore lost minerals, repair early carious lesions, reduce tooth sensitivity by occluding dentinal tubules, and create a protective barrier against acid attacks. It also exhibits antibacterial effects by binding to bacteria and preventing their adhesion to teeth. Beyond oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash, nanohydroxyapatite serves as a bone graft substitute in dental surgery (e.g., implantology, periodontal regeneration), as well as in orthopedic applications for bone repair.
