Overview

Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) is a synthetic, biocompatible, and bioactive material that chemically and structurally mimics the natural mineral component of human bone and tooth enamel. In dentistry, it is primarily utilized for the remineralization of enamel and the management of dentin hypersensitivity, including cases associated with Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH). The mechanism of action involves the deposition of nanoparticles into open dentinal tubules, effectively occluding them and reducing the transmission of painful stimuli to the dental pulp. Furthermore, nHAp acts as a reservoir for calcium and phosphate ions, promoting the formation of a new apatite layer on the tooth surface, which restores structural integrity and protects against acid erosion. It is often formulated as a varnish, gel, or paste for topical application.
