Nanoliposomes with cholesterol and lipid extract are an experimental biomimetic drug delivery system under investigation for the treatment of low-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (LGSOC). Developed by researchers at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, these nanoliposomes are composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), cholesterol, and a cellular lipid extract (LE) derived from LGSOC cell lines (e.g., PM-LGSOC-01). The formulation strategy aims to enhance target specificity and cellular internalization by mimicking the lipid profile of the tumor cells. Preclinical studies presented at AACR 2026 indicate that optimizing the cholesterol concentration is critical for maximizing cellular uptake, potentially offering a more effective delivery mechanism for therapeutic agents in chemotherapy-resistant LGSOC.
