nanoQuinon is a nanoparticle-based oral formulation of ubidecarenone (Coenzyme Q10) developed to enhance the bioavailability of this lipophilic compound. It was investigated by Kompetenznetz Parkinson e.V. (Parkinson's Competence Network, Germany) in a Phase 2 clinical trial for the treatment of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare and fatal neurodegenerative tauopathy. Ubidecarenone is a small molecule that acts as an essential cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, serving as the physiological electron recipient of Complex I and Complex II, and an electron donor for Complex III. By facilitating electron transfer, it supports ATP production via oxidative phosphorylation and functions as a potent antioxidant. The nanoQuinon formulation was specifically studied to determine if it could improve brain energy metabolism in PSP patients, addressing the mitochondrial dysfunction characteristic of the disease.
