Nanoselenium refers to elemental selenium engineered at the nanometer scale (typically 1–100 nm), often as discrete nanoparticles. Compared to inorganic and organic forms of selenium, nanoselenium exhibits higher bioavailability and lower toxicity. It acts primarily as an antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modulating redox balance in cells. Its unique properties make it suitable for use in dietary supplements for selenium deficiency prevention or therapy; it is also being explored for biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems due to its biocompatibility[7]. Functionalized or composite forms—such as chitosan- or protein-coated nanoselenium—are under research for targeted delivery or enhanced efficacy[3][6].
