Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NanoStat is a cardiovascular medication developed by Medlab Clinical (ASX: MDC) that utilizes the company's proprietary NanoCelle delivery technology to administer atorvastatin. Atorvastatin is a small molecule statin that functions as a competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the hepatic cholesterol synthesis pathway. NanoStat is formulated as an orobuccal spray, which allows for the delivery of atorvastatin in a 'free' form by cleaving the calcium salt pre-absorption. This delivery mechanism is designed to bypass first-pass metabolism, with clinical data indicating that a 1 mg spray dose can achieve higher free blood levels and improved metabolic functioning compared to a standard 20 mg oral tablet.
