Naphthalene Trisulfonate is a polysulfonated aromatic compound that exists in various isomeric forms, such as 1,3,5-naphthalene trisulfonate and 1,3,6-naphthalene trisulfonate. While primarily utilized as an intermediate in dye production and as a research chemical, it exhibits several biological activities. It functions as an inhibitor of enzymes like Dual-specificity phosphatase-5 (DUSP5), ATPases, and sulfatases, and acts as a competitive antagonist for P2 purinoceptors. Its chemical properties also lend it to applications in material science, such as forming complexes with hafnium(IV) ions for surface coatings, and in analytical chemistry, where it serves as a co-ion probe in capillary electrophoresis and a ligand in surface plasmon resonance assays. It is also used in the functionalization of nanomaterials, as a pH indicator, and as an additive in battery electrolytes. Despite its demonstrated biological activities, it is generally intended for research purposes and not designed for human therapeutic applications or veterinary use.
