Overview

Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, bursitis, gout attacks, menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), muscle aches and sprains. It is available both by prescription and over-the-counter in lower strengths. Naproxen works primarily by reversibly inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 (non-selective coxib), which decreases the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in inflammation and pain signaling[2][3][5][8]. The drug has analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. It is available as naproxen or its more rapidly absorbed salt form naproxen sodium[6][8]. It was originally developed by Syntex in the 1970s and is currently manufactured by various companies including Bayer (Aleve) and Roche (Naprosyn).
