Overview
SMARTECH TOPICAL is developing a topical 10% formulation of naproxen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), for the treatment of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Utilizing a proprietary topical drug delivery platform, the formulation is designed to deliver naproxen locally to the site of inflammation. Naproxen's mechanism of action involves the non-selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which prevents the conversion of arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. This localized approach is intended to provide effective analgesia while reducing the systemic exposure and gastrointestinal risks typically associated with oral NSAID therapy. The product is currently in early development as part of SMARTECH's pipeline of topical pain therapies.
