Overview

**Nardosinone** is a naturally occurring nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoid and the principal active ingredient derived from the medicinal plant Nardostachys jatamansi. It is a small molecule with the chemical formula C15H22O3 and is characterized structurally by an intrinsic five-membered peroxide ring. Nardosinone has demonstrated a range of pharmacological activities in preclinical research, including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, antibacterial, anti-hypertrophic, and anticancer effects. It has shown efficacy in promoting neural stem cell proliferation and migration, modulating dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) to alleviate parkinsonian symptoms in animal models, and protecting against cognitive deficits. Although low in toxicity based on acute studies, comprehensive pharmacokinetic and toxicological data are lacking. The key mechanism identified in vivo is likely agonism or positive modulation of dopamine receptor D2[1][2][3][4][5].
