Overview

Nardostachys jatamansi is a perennial herb native to the Himalayan region and widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. The rhizomes and roots are the primary medicinal parts. Traditionally employed as a neuroprotective agent for conditions such as epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia, convulsions, mental weakness and other neurological disorders[1][2][5]. It is also used for cardiovascular diseases (including hypertension), skin diseases (as a blood purifier), digestive issues (gastric disorders), hepatoprotection (jaundice), reproductive health (seminal debility), respiratory ailments and as an adaptogen[1][3][4]. Phytochemically rich in sesquiterpenes like jatamansone/nardostachone/actinidine; lignans; neolignans; essential oils; flavonoids; beta-sitosterol; oleanolic acid[6][7][9]. Animal studies suggest antioxidant activity may underlie its neuroprotective effects. Other reported activities include antidepressant effects[5], anticonvulsant action[2], antiarrhythmic properties[4], vasodilation/spasmolytic/bronchodilator actions and antimicrobial activity against various pathogens[4]. Clinical trial data are limited but small studies have explored its use for hypertension and insomnia with oral dosing of powdered root/rhizome or capsules up to 3–4 g/day over several weeks[1].
