Overview

Naringin is a naturally occurring flavanone glycoside found predominantly in citrus fruits such as grapefruit and lime. It consists of the aglycone naringenin linked to the disaccharide neohesperidose at the 7-carbon position. Naringin is responsible for the characteristic bitter taste of grapefruit and is used commercially for its debittering properties in juice production. In humans and other mammals, it is metabolized by the enzyme naringinase into its aglycone form (naringenin), which has higher bioactivity. Pharmacologically, naringin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic activities and can inhibit certain membrane transporters such as OATP1A2. It also modulates various signaling pathways including JAK/STAT and MAPK/ERK[1][4][5]. Its low solubility and bioavailability limit clinical use; however it remains widely studied for potential therapeutic applications.
