Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nasal Comfort is a brand name for over-the-counter nasal products, most commonly formulated as a 0.65% sodium chloride (saline) solution. It is primarily utilized as a nasal moisturizer and mechanical irrigation agent to alleviate symptoms of dry or irritated nasal passages associated with allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and environmental factors such as low humidity. The mechanism of action is non-pharmacological in the traditional sense; the isotonic or hypotonic saline solution thins nasal secretions and promotes mucociliary clearance by physically flushing out allergens, pathogens, and particulate matter from the nasal mucosa. While the saline formulation marketed by Major Pharmaceuticals is the most clinically recognized version, the name is also used for homeopathic formulations (e.g., by Similasan) and saline-xylitol combinations (e.g., by SinuCleanse). Medically, it is distinguished from medicated decongestant sprays by its lack of sympathomimetic amines, thereby avoiding the risk of tachyphylaxis and rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa).
