Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nasedyl Cough Linctus is an oral combination cough syrup developed and manufactured by National Pharmaceutical. It is approved in Hong Kong as an over-the-counter (OTC) western medicine for the relief of cough and associated respiratory symptoms. The formulation contains three active ingredients: codeine, ephedrine, and promethazine. Codeine acts as a centrally acting antitussive by agonizing the mu-opioid receptor to suppress the cough reflex. Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as an agonist on alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors, providing bronchodilation and decongestant effects. Promethazine is a first-generation antihistamine that antagonizes histamine H1 receptors and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, offering sedative, anti-allergic, and anticholinergic properties to alleviate runny nose and sneezing.
