nateglinide

Nateglinide is an oral antihyperglycemic agent used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the meglitinide class of short-acting insulin secretagogues and works by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic β cells in a glucose-dependent manner. Nateglinide achieves this by binding to and inhibiting ATP-sensitive potassium channels on pancreatic β cells, leading to cell membrane depolarization, opening of voltage-gated calcium channels, and subsequent exocytosis of insulin granules. This mechanism results in an early insulin response to meals, thereby decreasing postprandial blood glucose levels. Nateglinide was developed by Ajinomoto and marketed by Novartis[1][5][6].
