Overview

Natural Calculus Bovis (NCB), also known as Niu Huang, is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from the natural gallstones of *Bos taurus domesticus Gmelin*. It has been utilized for over two millennia in traditional medicine for its heat-clearing, detoxifying, and neuroprotective properties. NCB is a complex natural product containing several bioactive components, including bilirubin, bile acids (such as cholic acid and deoxycholic acid), and taurine. These constituents are believed to exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects, which are particularly relevant in the management of secondary brain injury following hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage. Tongji Hospital is currently evaluating NCB in an investigator-initiated clinical trial to assess its efficacy and safety compared to Calculus Bovis Sativus (CBS), a biochemically synthesized substitute, in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage.
