Overview

Natural killer (NK) cell infusion is a type of cellular immunotherapy that involves administering NK cells to patients to treat various diseases, particularly cancer and autoimmune conditions. NK cells are part of the innate immune system and can recognize and kill abnormal cells, including cancer cells and virus-infected cells, without prior exposure to the pathogen. The therapy works by enhancing the body's natural immune surveillance and defense mechanisms. NK cells modulate their activity through a balance of activating and inhibiting receptors on their surface, allowing them to recognize and destroy abnormal cells while sparing normal tissue. Patients typically receive preparative lymphodepleting chemotherapy before NK cell infusion and are monitored for infusion-related reactions during and after administration.
