Overview
Navafenterol is a novel, investigational small molecule drug developed as an inhaled long-acting bronchodilator for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It acts as a dual-pharmacology agent with both muscarinic receptor antagonist and beta 2 adrenergic receptor agonist activity. Navafenterol was designed to provide bronchodilation by simultaneously blocking muscarinic receptors (reducing bronchoconstriction) and stimulating beta 2 adrenergic receptors (promoting airway smooth muscle relaxation). The drug was developed by Almirall and AstraZeneca but its clinical development has been discontinued for strategic reasons after reaching phase II trials in COPD and phase I in asthma[1][3][6].
