Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NB-001 is a topical nanoemulsion developed by NanoBio Corporation (later renamed BlueWillow Biologics) for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores). The formulation consists of nanometer-sized oil-in-water droplets (approximately 180 nm) that utilize a physical mechanism of action to disrupt the outer lipid membrane of the herpes simplex virus (HSV), leading to viral lysis. This nanoemulsion-based treatment is applied as a 0.3% emulsion and works by permeating through the skin to the site of infection without significant systemic absorption. Unlike traditional antiviral drugs that target viral replication, NB-001's physical disruption of the viral envelope minimizes the risk of drug resistance. The drug has completed Phase 2b and Phase 3 clinical trials, demonstrating efficacy comparable to oral antiviral drugs with a superior safety profile.
