Overview
NB01 is a topical live biotherapeutic product (LBP) developed for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris. It consists of a proprietary, health-associated strain of *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*) designed to restore the skin microbiome. The therapy employs a 'replacement' strategy, where the beneficial strain is applied topically to displace disease-associated, pro-inflammatory strains of *C. acnes* within the hair follicles. In clinical settings, the treatment protocol often involved a short pretreatment with benzoyl peroxide to reduce the resident bacterial population, followed by daily application of NB01 to facilitate the 'engraftment' of the healthy strain. While the drug reached Phase 1b clinical trials, the program was ultimately discontinued after failing to demonstrate significant clinical efficacy, and Naked Biome's assets were subsequently acquired by DermBiont.
