NBQX is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a potent and selective competitive antagonist of the AMPA (α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate) receptor and also blocks kainate receptors at higher concentrations. By inhibiting these ionotropic glutamate receptors, NBQX prevents excitatory neurotransmission mediated by glutamate. It is widely used in research to study glutamatergic signaling and neuroprotection. NBQX has demonstrated neuroprotective and anticonvulsant effects in animal models and is used experimentally to counteract glutamate excitotoxicity. It does not affect NMDA receptors at relevant concentrations[1][2][3][4][5]. The compound is not approved for clinical use but serves as an important pharmacological tool in neuroscience.
