Overview

NC-2700 is a novel, potent, and highly selective small molecule urate transporter 1 (URAT1) inhibitor being developed by Nippon Chemiphar for the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. Classified as a selective urate reabsorption inhibitor (SURI), NC-2700 works by inhibiting the URAT1 transporter in the kidneys, which is responsible for the reabsorption of uric acid from the urine back into the bloodstream. By blocking this process, the drug facilitates the renal excretion of uric acid. A distinguishing feature of NC-2700 is its ability to raise urinary pH (ameliorating aciduria), which potentially decreases the risk of renal calculus (kidney stones) and nephrotoxicity often associated with uricosuric therapy. As of early 2024, the compound has completed non-clinical studies and is in the preclinical stage, with the developer seeking out-licensing opportunities.
