Overview

The nCaF2-containing orthodontic primer is a bioactive dental material developed by researchers at the University of Baghdad to prevent white spot lesions (WSLs) during fixed orthodontic treatment. The formulation consists of calcium fluoride nanoparticles (nCaF2) at concentrations of 5%, 10%, or 20% by weight, incorporated into a conventional orthodontic primer (Transbond XT). The primer is designed to be applied to the enamel surface before bracket bonding. Its mechanism of action relies on the pH-responsive release of calcium and fluoride ions when the oral environment becomes acidic. These ions facilitate the remineralization of enamel by promoting the formation of fluorapatite crystals, which are more resistant to acid than hydroxyapatite. Additionally, the material aims to reduce the levels of cariogenic bacteria such as *Streptococcus mutans* on the tooth surface.
