Overview

NCX-4240 is an investigational **ophthalmic iota-carrageenan formulation** developed by Nicox for acute adenoviral conjunctivitis, including epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. The eye drops contain iota-carrageenan at 3.2 mg/mL, a sulfated polysaccharide derived from red algae. Iota-carrageenan is intended to exert a local broad antiviral barrier effect by binding viral particles and hindering their attachment to and entry into host ocular-surface cells, thereby reducing adenoviral replication and disease duration or severity. Nicox registered a randomized Phase 2 trial in adenoviral conjunctivitis, but the study was withdrawn.
